Leaves on the ground, bushes over the windows, overgrown ivy, mail spewing out of the tin box, the smell of smoke and fall in the air, car washes, long over due coffee with friends, familiar beds, laundry, laundry, laundry...

Today I'm home after completing the first half of this fall's "Young Love Tour". It's been creatively exhilarating and physically draining. The first days off after a long run always leave me with an immense sense of quiet satisfaction. Somehow I feel mildly overwhelmed with all of the loose ends in my life, as well as the complete freedom to do nothing. It's a strange and relaxing place to be.

I started touring around 2004. I took my guitar & a box of burned cds and played anywhere that would have me. Eventually, I added a dreadlocked friend on piano and later graduated to a tour manager & a van. Years went by and people slowly started to show up. A few dozen at first. From Schubas in Chicago to the Crocodile in Seattle, people would come to hear me play the 10 songs I knew.

When Nothing Left To Lose came out and a single started getting played on the radio, I added a full band of friends, as well as a trailer to the back of our van. We would drive through the night, each person contorting their bodies to find just enough space to lay horizontal across all the benches, on the ground, between the metal bars of the seats, surrendering to the gravitational pull of 3am. Friends limp like crash test dummies hurled across the country in a humming metal box. I still feel hurled along - hurled into a places of awe and places of responsibility.

I have required an immense amount of grace over the years. I have also had to give it away at painful amounts. I never have been one to hold tryouts for a band. I have asked friends to come join me on the road. Sometimes I'm a gracious host, sometimes I'm an impossible to please boss. Lately, I have been seeing with eyes a little more open due to the grace that a woman can bring.

Today, I will rest a little more, but I keep eyeing the guitars on my wall. "What do you want"?, I want to say. Maybe it should say, "Hello dear friend, what can I do for you"? Being a solo artist started out of necessity and grew into an identity. From the outside I watch my friends in bands and it seems like keeping a band together looks like a hellish marriage & other days it looks like true companionship.

It's the brown leaves and the clouds that have me thinking today. I can't wait to keep going and see where this road leads me as a musician, a performer, a friend, a boss, and a believer in the grace of god, because I know I need it.

We are starting the second leg of this fall's tour this week and we will be adding a bunch more dates across the country in the near future. See you soon...

Today I'm at Soundcheck rehearsal space putting the finishing touches on everything for theYoung Love Tour. I'm still working on the set list, as it's one of the hardest parts; picking what songs get played each night. It always feels like your leaving one of your kids behind at the supermarket.

I wanted to take a minute and introduce you to the band, Leagues. They will be supporting this fall's tour. They are some of my closest friends, including Tyler and Jeremy, who have played in my band for quite some time now.

I'm sitting alone in West Hollywood at Cafe Prima, sleep deprived, filled with an sense of peace, as well as anticipation. I just finished a long run of dates, which always leaves a sense of accomplishment. Someone on a plane sitting next to you asks, "You were on a tour? Where you been?" and you smirk and say "You name it". This time it's entirely different because I can't help but know I've just begun.

Today marks a day I have only experienced a few times in my life; the release of a new record, the preparation for a new tour, and another shot to live my dream. I can't help but feel freaked out and completely blessed all in the same breath. I have to hold still so that the DJ kid sitting next to me ripping vinyl onto his laptop doesn't see my eyes fill with tears as I write this. Here we go again. We are in this together. If "Young Love" is worth anything it's because you think it is. I started out making records for my friends. I'd track them down and make them listen to the new songs I had written. It was like I was trying to rip their heart out with a pocket knife and sing the grace of god back over the damage I had done. Not much has changed over these last years. I've kept on trying to do that same thing in different ways. And it seems I have made a few more friends than when I started. Thank you for all your support, I hope this finds you well.

I was standing by the Anthropologie shoe table debating if a sweater was a good gift for my sister in law; She was standing between two racks of dresses in purple boots. I knew one of her friends and introduced myself, she seemed disinterested.

It's been an amazing year for me personally, spiritually, and creatively. I finished my new record, "Young Love", signed with a new record label.....oh, and met and married the woman of my dreams. We exchanged vows under a canopy of southern weeping willows on blazing June evening. It was amazing.

I wrote "Hey Mama" about that first day we met between the shoe table and the dress rack. The chorus popped into my head driving home one night. I recorded some hand claps & a big bass drum and wrote the rest dancing around my living room that night. I hope you feel some of the butterflies. You can listen to it here.

I wanted to let you know that I released a new song today titled "Runaway", which is on the Soul Surfer soundtrack. Soul Surfer is a true story about Bethany Hampton, a young, promising surfer who lost her arm in a shark attack. I actually surfed with Bethany once in Hawaii years ago, before the accident. When I heard they were making a movie, I jumped at the chance to get a song in it.

I'm in Denver today visiting radio stations getting the word out about 'Young Love'. Looks like "Hey Mama" is going to be the first single. More to come about that soon.

The sun came out yesterday -- I can feel spring coming. We have a calendar up counting down the days until we finish my new project, "Young Love", and we don't have much time left. Up until last week we had played all the music ourselves (in Brentwood, TN), so we decided to shake things up and invite some friends in. We booked a room at Nashville's legendary, Sound Emporium, which is just a few blocks from my house and watched a bunch of my songs jump to life in new ways. Here's the latest studio video of the affair.

Hello!

It's a rainy Monday here in Nashville. Something about this weather reminds me of home and driving around Eugene listening to Tribe in my VW squareback. We are working hard on Young Love today. We are close to finishing this baby, I can feel it. I honestly have never been this excited about a project. Now, I just have to figure out how to get it all done... and my eye is twitching...

We are putting up a new video of me acting a fool in the studio so you can join in on the process.

Also, I would also like to announce some new shows! I was asked to go on tour with Owl City and it seemed like we would have a good time, so we are getting the boys back together and gearing up to hit the road. I can't wait!
